The municipal groups of the Madrid City Council, with the abstention of the PSOE, they have elevated this Tuesday to the Plenary of Cibeles the project of the Sector West Olympic Park to erect a “sports city with capital letters” in the district of San Blas-Canillejas, in the vicinity of the Wanda Metropolitano stadium of Atlético de Madrid.
In an extraordinary and urgent session of the commission of the Urban Development area, the municipal groups have provisionally approved the modification of the general urban planning plan of 1997 to undertake this project before its full elevation for final approval.
Full lift has gone ahead with the Favorable votes from Más Madrid, PP, Ciudadanos and Vox, and the PSOE has abstained, whose mayor Mercedes González has questioned the monetary compensation to Atlético de Madrid and recalled that the previous plan of the project, initially framed in the Madrid Olympic bid, was annulled by the Superior Court of Justice, although there is an appeal still unsolved.
“The main modification that is made is the one that is intended to compensate for the loss of 88,150 square meters of land classified so far as a general system (what the Wanda occupies). The City Council chooses to compensate it financially, considering that it is not possible to find available soils with similar characteristics, “said González.
The socialist mayor has said that another solution should be sought because “it places Wanda again in a new legal insecurity that we know is very difficult to resolve but that prevents us from voting affirmatively for this modification. “
The delegate of Urban Development, Mariano Fuentes, has defended that without the modifications the file “would not have come to a good end”.
“Today we bring to this commission the transformation of 1.2 million square meters of land that was intended for a specific purpose, the celebration of some Olympics. At the moment this has not been possible but without a doubt this project that we present today continues to have the famous Olympic spirit “, assured the delegate of Ciudadanos.
He has added that “from today what could not be serves as a seed for a new sustainable, social, shared project, in short, more rea”: “The essence of this file is to make an authentic sports city with capital letters in San Blas-Canillejas.”
In this new project, in the special management area of the Olympic Park-western sector and the La Peineta stadium, the Town Hall plans to install a “mini stadium” with a capacity for 6,500 spectators and that it can host Second Division events, in addition to another four soccer fields for younger ages, an athletics stadium and tennis, basketball, volleyball and paddle courts.
The old Aquatic Center, a huge infrastructure now in disuse, is classified as unique equipment for the implementation of a multifunctional complex whose vocation is to be a center of reference in the city and to revitalize the district. The Spanish Federation had presented a project to revitalize it. 120 million euros were ‘buried’ in the construction of the skeleton.
All these sports facilities would surround the Wanda Metropolitano state and the current aquatic center – half done and unused – and they would be established as a park, with 3,550 parking spaces in total and pedestrian paths, as shown in the file.
