Madrid taxi drivers demand a 50% reduction of the fleet from Almeida
The pandemic, which has already killed more than 28,800 people, has caused great losses in the taxi sector, where they say they are experiencing “the worst summer in its history.”
With losses of 87% during confinement and up to 70% during the de-escalation period, according to the report of the Department of Transport of the Community of Madrid, taxi drivers demand aid from the Madrid City Council to refloat the sector.
September will be the same
During the month of August, the number of vehicles circulating in Madrid has reduced the fleet to 40%, from Monday to Friday and they have maintained 50% on weekends and holidays.
The turnover has been reduced more than 50% during the month of August.
With the new cases of coronavirus in the capital, they foresee that the situation will worsen so “it does not make sense to keep the entire fleet on the street.”
Another measure to reduce the fleet and maintain activity by reducing expenses on the street, is to lengthen the payback period for taxi drivers.
Financial aid
The president of the FPTM, Julio Sanz, has presented a letter to the mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, with a series of measures, in addition to the reduction of the fleet, so that the sector survives.
According to article 5 of Royal Decree Law 27/2020, “an extraordinary support credit is approved for public transport services owned by local entities.”
The car-taxi is a public transport, so it would fall within the sectors of this decree. Therefore, from the FPTM they request financial aid for the “empowerment and modernization” of the sector and the implementation of the TXMAD application.
In addition, of the aid that can be provided according to Royal Decree 27/2020, the Federation also claims direct aid to professionals in the sector who are licensed, due to the losses caused by Covid-19, since, as indicated, the sector “is going to continue to suffer.”
