Madrid Organizes Simultaneous Blood Donation Macro-Marathon to Save Lives

From today until October 8, the Community of Madrid is organizing a simultaneous blood donation macro-marathon in public and private hospitals in the region and in extraction units. The initiative, organized by the regional Transfusion Center, is celebrated with the motto Save lives. Donate at least twice a year.

The Alcalá de Henares City Council joins this initiative and encourages citizens to come and donate during this week to the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital, where you can donate from Monday to Friday. Likewise, all neighbors who want to join You can also do this macromarathon on Tuesday the 3rd at the Mobile Donation Units of the Community of Madrid and the Red Cross, which will be located at Hipercor from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on Avda Reyes Católicos from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Thursday the 5th there will also be one located in the Glorieta del Chorrillo from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The objective is to reach 7,500 bags of total blood between all donation points this week, and thus alleviate the decrease in donations produced during the summer. This amount would allow us to recover reserve levels, which are currently at 55%, and would allow us to face the autumn with some peace of mind and provide a daily response to hospital demand.

To cover the needs of Madrid hospitals, in a normal situation 900 bags of blood are needed per day. However, the average in summer has been reduced to 500. Specifically, between June, July and August, 50,899 were extracted, 7% less than during the same period of the previous year.

The minimum requirements to donate are to be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh more than 50 kilos and be in good health. The Transfusion Center of the Community of Madrid distributes 250,000 bags of blood each year to all hospitals in

the region, five of them on the list of the largest and most complex in national healthcare.

Every year, in the region, around 38,000 units of blood can be transfused in surgeries, 42,000 for onco-hematological patients, 30,000 in emergencies and 9,000 in pediatric interventions. Depending on the patient’s pathology, one or more blood components, red blood cells, plasma and platelets, are transfused, so a single action can help improve or save the lives of up to three patients.
