Madrid Faces Shortage of Nurses for Flu and Covid-19 Vaccination Campaigns

MADRID, 21 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Satse Madrid has warned this Thursday that the vaccination campaign that starts in October in the Community of Madrid for flu and Covid-19 and for bronchiolitis in babies will do so “without enough nurses” to carry it out and, in this sense, it has demanded to extend the summer contracts.

In a statement, the Nursing union has stressed that “the most logical solution” to this lack of personnel is to extend the current summer contracts, those made to cover the vacations of professionals, “at least” until the end of the campaign. vaccination.

“This would prevent, for example, nurses in health centers from having to close agendas and stop carrying out programs they currently develop,” the union alleged.

Specifically, the vaccination campaign against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) will begin on October 2, to reduce the impact of bronchiolitis in babies under 6 months, in the public hospitals of La Paz, Gregorio Marañón, Niño Jesús and October 12 of the capital, and in Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda.

A few days later, on October 16, the annual joint vaccination campaign against flu and Covid-19 will begin, which this year will last until January 31. “One more year, nurses in health centers will be forced to close agendas and stop carrying out other activities in order to vaccinate the assigned population,” they warned.

“Nursing staff are scarce, and even more so in Madrid where the nurse/patient ratio is one of the lowest in the State, but to the Ministry this does not seem to be too important,” lamented the union organization, which has insisted on the “urgent need” to hire more nurses, specialist nurses and physiotherapists “if quality care is to be offered.”

In this context, they warn that, given the lack of professionals, the best thing would be to extend the summer contracts. “When they want to hire, they will not find nurses who will already be working in other Autonomous Communities where, in addition, they will have better working and remuneration conditions since, unlike Madrid, in other Health Services they tend to hire for longer and, furthermore, with foresight,” he warned.
