The former Polish president and founder of the independent trade union “Solidarity” Lech Walesa joined the public campaign against the upcoming concert of Madonna in Poland. “I call on the organizers of her tour to change the date of the concert so that on this solemn day for our Polish faith, an appropriate prayerful atmosphere can reign,” said Walesa.
Madonna’s concert in Warsaw is due to take place on August 15, when Catholics celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Poland celebrates the anniversary of the 1920 Warsaw Uprising.
Radical Catholic organizations in the country announced a protest against the pop icon’s concert, and the national coordinator of the campaign, Marian Buzynski, compared the singer to the antichrist and called the upcoming concert blasphemy. During the show on her tour, the singer appears on stage as if from a crucifix. Madonna’s team has yet to respond to Polish requests to cancel the date.
