“I’m very surprised to have gotten this far,” Madonna admitted Saturday night, as the crowd cheered her. And instead, she did it: her long-awaited «Celebration Tour» kicked off from the O2 Arena in London (it will arrive in Milan, on 23 and 25 November, for two very sold-out dates) and she went on stage to recover Queen of Pop scepter and crown.
At the age of 65, after the scare (hers and her fans) from the bacterial infection which forced her to spend several days in intensive care in June, Miss Ciccone cut the ribbon on the world tour celebrating 40 years of her career, retracing her life through songs and giving ample space to the hits that from the 80s onwards contributed to making her a legend. It is she who recalls her beginnings, arriving on the Lower East Side of New York at the age of 20 «with no money, without food, without a home» and forced to live in a rehearsal room without a bathroom: «I had no way to take a shower and therefore I dated men who had a bathtub or shower. At one point in the conversation, I casually asked if they had a bathroom. And so yes, blowjobs in exchange for showers, this is the truth.”

Madonna never gave up because, she said, “I saw the future”, and she didn’t give up even last summer when many were holding their breath, worried about the rumors that she was overtired by rehearsals for the tour, which was then postponed, and had asked too much of his physique. She herself, she confirmed during the concert, singing «I Will Survive» by Gloria Gaynor, was not certain of recovering from the infection: «I didn’t think I would make it and neither did my doctors: in fact I woke up with all the my children around me. I forgot five days of my life, or my death, I’m not sure where I was. But the angels protected me and my children were with me, my children always save me.” Four of her six children were also on stage with her, an integral part of a show full of choreography, visuals, costume changes and interspersed with some provocation, as was her habit.
There was no shortage of references to current events and in particular to the war in the Middle East: «We are all suffering watching what is happening in Israel and Palestine, it breaks my heart to see children suffering, teenagers suffering, elderly people suffering . It’s all terrible,” she said. But then her invitation was not to give up, as she always did: «Even if our hearts are broken, there is so much we can do. First of all we can say “I can make a difference because individually I can bring light to the world with my actions and words every single day”. Sorry, I don’t want to lecture you, but all together we are very powerful – he said -. We can unite in a dark and evil way or we can unite from light and love. And if we all have this collective consciousness, we can change the world and we can bring peace, not only to the Middle East, but to the whole world. Are you with me?”
