Rio de Janeiro is preparing for Madonna’s biggest ever concert. The now 65-year-old pop icon will give a free show on Copacabana beach tonight. Around 1.5 million people are expected.
In the early hours of the morning, fans from all over the world gathered at the beach to secure a place for the show. The concert is believed to be Madonna’s last act Celebration Tour, celebrating her more than 40-year career. To thank her fans, the concert is free.
Madonna fever has been living through Rio de Janeiro for days. Preparations for the “historic event” on “the biggest dance floor in the world” have been going on all week. The level of more than 800 square meters was regularly used and thousands of people tried to catch a glimpse of it every day. So many people came to watch on Friday night that the wide beach road was blocked for a while by the huge crowd of Madonna fans, according to local news site g1.
‘Operation Madonna’
Around 3,200 police officers were deployed to ensure that everything ran smoothly. Streets are closed and monitored with metal detectors, facial recognition cameras and drones. Anyway, ‘Operation Madonna’ is not unique to the Copacabana in terms of visitor numbers: the annual New Year’s party on the beach attracts about as many visitors.
Meanwhile, there is much speculation about the content of the show. Madonna is known to perform at least 26 songs from all stages of her career. In addition, the singer often invites local artists to participate in the show. Brazilian popular queen Pabllo Vittar and singer Anitta were seen on stage during the rehearsals. Four of Madonna’s children would also appear on stage.
There are no tickets for the concert; First come, first served. For those who cannot attend, the concert will be broadcast live on Brazilian TV.
