The American singer Madonna wrote on Twitter an appeal addressed to Pope Francis to be able to meet him and discuss his excommunication by the Catholic Church. She, madonna, says she is a “good Catholic”, although she admits that she has not confessed in a few decades (in the tweet she also uses a play on words with the English term swear, which means both “swear” and “swear”). She says that she has been excommunicated three times, without specifying for what reasons, and that she does not consider it right.
“Would it be possible to meet one day to discuss some important things?” I have been excommunicated 3 times. It does not seem right”
Hello @Pontifex Francis —I’m a good Catholic. I Swear! I mean I don’t Swear! Its been a few decades since my last confession. Would it be possible to meet up one day to discuss some important matters ?
I’ve been ex communicated 3 times. It doesn’t seem fair. Sincerely Madonna– Madonna (@Madonna) May 5, 2022
It is not the first time that Madonna says she has been excommunicated from the Catholic Church: she had said this several times in the past, the most recent in the course of a 2016 interview with British host James Corden. However, she never explained in detail what had happened, and there was never any public statement on the matter from the Catholic Church.
The same Church in the past, however, had often criticized Madonna, especially at the peak of her career between the 1980s and 1990s, for some attitudes considered blasphemous. Among them was the famous video of Like a Prayerfrom 1989, in which you could see crosses in flames, the singer’s hands with stigmata and other elements taken from Christian iconography.
