The accident happened in the second run of the qualification in the scratch discipline for 15 kilometers. According to the Daily Mail, it was Walls and his colleague Matthew Bostok who had to be taken to the hospital. Walls was treated directly at the stadium for more than 40 minutes before an ambulance took him away.

Spectators were injured after Walls crashed his bike through the barriers at the high bank of the corner. The 24-year-old Olympic omnia champion tried to avoid the riders who fell right in front of him. Witnesses said that because of the sharp slope, the spectators in the first row had no chance to see its top.
Several fans were treated by paramedics for minor injuries, none of them had to go to the hospital. One man was treated for cuts on his hand, and attention was paid to a young girl. Another had to be taken away in a wheelchair, covered in blood.
After the collision, the rest of qualifying at the velodrome was suspended. Spectators were also asked to leave as Walls was attended to by cycling staff right in the stands.
