In the third ODI in Chennai, India, who were looking for a win and a series, failed. Australia took sweet revenge for the Test defeat and won the ODI series by 21 runs. With the defeat, India also lost the top spot in the ICCC ODI rankings.
With the win, the Aussies took the top spot. India slipped to second place. Both have 113 rating points. In January this year, India reached number one by winning a three-match ODI series at home against New Zealand (3-0). After that, India defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 and secured the first place. After winning the first match of the series against the Aussies, the hosts lost the next two matches.
This is the first time that India has lost a series at home after 26 consecutive series victories in ODIs, Tests and T20Is on Indian soil. Before this, India lost in the ODI series against Australia in March 2019.
The Aussies won the toss and batted and were bowled out for 269 runs in 49 overs. India’s reply ended at 248 in 49.1 overs. Virat Kohli (54 off 72 balls) is the top scorer with a half-century. For Australia, spinner Adam Sampa conceded 45 runs in 10 overs and took four wickets and became the man of the match. The openers captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a good start but could not capitalize.
