Christian Bruckner, the man German prosecutors hold responsible for Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, is on trial in Germany for the first time.
Christian Bruckner was captured arriving at the court in Lower Saxony in a police van. A crowd of about 40 journalists awaited him at the courthouse to question him about Madeleine, who disappeared in 2007 from the hotel where she was on holiday with her parents when she was just three years old.
It is the first time the convicted felon has appeared in public since 2020, when he was captured getting into an ambulance to receive treatment after an assault in prison.
Bruckner, 47, is accused of three counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault in cases involving five women and girls aged between 10 and 80 – charges he described as “ridiculous”.
They hope it will provide information about Madeleine
The verdict against him is expected to be issued in June. If convicted of all charges, he will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. But officials hope that by securing a conviction, the defendant will relent and offer information about Madeleine in exchange for a more lenient sentence — although sources close to him say he will remain silent and not testify.
Bruckner is already serving a seven-year sentence for raping an elderly US woman in 2005 and was jailed in 2019 following the testimony of two former friends, who will also testify at his new trial.
It is recalled that Madeleine McCann disappeared without a trace in May 2007 and her abduction has become one of the world’s most notorious mysteries, with her parents still searching for answers. German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said he believes Bruckner kidnapped the little girl and that Madeleine is dead, but the suspect has not been charged and denies any involvement in the case.
