Made in Italy: record year for exports over 500 billion. Fly China and Germany

We have already reached the annual record, beyond the pre-Covid level, since last June. If for exports, as well as for other economic performance indicators, December is the symbolic month of reference for the year, a watershed that allows us to compare historical data with the most recent ones, in reality the annual balance of our sales beyond the border has already expressed for some time a value higher than the 480 billion made in 2019, the highest level ever reached.

Pre-Covid levels already exceeded in June

In fact, taking the mobile year as a reference, the pre-Covid levels were already exceeded in June, with a gradual strengthening in the following months: in the period September 2020-August 2021, the latest data available, made in Italy reached close to the 500 billion euros (494), a balance that also tends to improve from month to month. With July, thanks also to one-off naval orders, to represent (49 billion) the single highest value ever. A trend that in the absence of abrupt turnarounds projects the 2021 values to over 500 billion and which already materializes in a largely positive comparison in the first eight months of the year, up by 6% compared to the same period in 2019.

The additional 17 billion of manufacturing activities are spread across multiple sectors. With a few negative exceptions, among which the textile-clothing naturally stands out (here the gap is 7%, 2.6 billion), the only area that is struggling to get closer to pre-pandemic levels.

The sector star is the metals area, the protagonist of a jump of 18%. This growth, however, here more than elsewhere, is affected by a significant inflationary effect, with the price lists revised upwards several times to take into account, albeit almost never fully, the significant increases in the price of raw materials.

Growth in almost all sectors

Widespread growths are visible almost everywhere, for example in electronics, means of transport, furniture and rubber-plastic. In addition to metals, however, in particular the food-beverage area is running, which compared to 2019 is in progress between January and August by 15%, adding just under four billion to the receipts of companies.
