AMERICAN FOOTBALL ⋅ American football legend John Madden has died at the age of 85. “Nobody loved football more than the coach. He was football,” said Commissioner Roger Goodell, John Madden.
John Madden led the Oakland Raiders to win the Super Bowl for the first time in 1977. Two years later, Madden surprisingly ended his coaching career at 42 – and became the voice of American football. From 1979 to 2009 he analyzed football games on US TV and won 16 Emmy Awards. The annual NFL computer game has also been named Madden since 1988.
When John Madden was inducted into the Hall of Fame 15 years ago, Madden lectured, “People often ask me, Are you a coach, or a commentator, or a video game guy? But I’m a coach. I’ve always been a coach. ” (sda)
