Macy’s would build a skyscraper over its New York store

Macy’s department store has plans to build an office skyscraper over its headquarters in Herald Square.

To do this, it will invest 235 million dollars, from private investors, creating more than 16,000 jobs.

Officials on Tuesday announced a vision to improve accessibility to the Herald Square station and improve the neighborhood.

“We are redoubling our commitment to New York by reinvesting in our flagship location and improving Herald Square through our project,” explained Macy’s President and CEO Jeff Gennette.

However, the tower still needs the green light from City Hall for a zoning change because of its size and height: 1.5 million square feet of office space and between 750 and 900 feet tall, according to plans shown.

Likewise, the retailer informed that the store will remain open during construction.

As a leading hub for international trade, New York City is forecasting a significant number of new office jobs in 2021, expecting a return to pre-pandemic offices by the fourth quarter of this year.

Macy’s is one of New York City’s busiest and most visited destinations, an establishment with a century of history.

According to a press release, the main changes would be the following:

– Transform Herald Square & Broadway Plaza into a modern car-free pedestrianized urban space for New Yorkers and visitors to come together and enjoy one of the most historic places in the city with improved connections to public transportation and substantial improvements to the subway station. Herald Square.

– Facilitate pedestrian access on Broadway and 34th Street while creating new efficient transit entrances to the Herald Square Subway Station near Penn Station.

– Improve the entrance to the Herald Square subway station in Greeley Square by adding a new significantly improved gateway entrance.
