French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the decision of the Supreme Court (MA) United States of America (USA) which revokes the right to abortion. Macron said the decision was a challenge to women’s freedom.
“They must be protected. I express my solidarity with the women whose freedom today is being challenged by the Supreme Court of the United States,” Macron said on Instagram.
Previously, the United States (US) Supreme Court took steps to overturn Roe v Wade’s 1973 decision that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to abortion and legalized it nationally. The decision gave a landmark victory to Republicans and religious conservatives who wanted to limit or ban abortion.
The Court, in a 6-3 decision backed by its conservative majority, upheld a Republican-backed Mississippi law that prohibits abortion after 15 weeks. The vote is 5-4 to cancel Roe.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote separately saying he would enforce Mississippi laws but took no additional steps to remove precedent altogether.
The judge argued Roe v Wade’s decision to allow abortions performed before the fetus can live outside the womb – between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation – was wrong because the US Constitution does not specify the right to abortion.
A version of the draft ruling written by conservative Judge Samuel Alito that indicated the court might overturn Roe leaked in May and sparked a political storm. Friday’s verdict written by Alito was largely in accordance with his leaked draft.
