Macron fears poor election results | Abroad

It was originally scheduled for March 22, but was postponed due to the corona outbreak. The elections are in about 5000 municipalities. In 25,000 cities, towns and communities, the battle was decided after the first round. The first round was on March 15 during the corona epidemic, a day before Macron announced severe restrictions.

The number of voters who showed up on March 15 was never so low at 45 percent. At around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, turnout in most regions was between 15 and 20 percent. That is a few percentage points less than in the previous elections in 2014, local media report.

Analysts expect the candidates of Macron’s movement La République en marche! (LREM) will end up on the board in few municipalities. During the first round, the game made little impression. Agnès Buzyn, former health minister under Macron and a Paris mayoral candidate, finished in disappointing third place.

Buzyn did not become a candidate until LREM’s first choice got involved in a sex scandal. Socialist Anne Hidalgo is expected to remain mayor of the French capital.

If the elections for the LREM go badly, then chances are Macron will overhaul his cabinet. The position of Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, in particular, seems shaky. This is evident from the fact that he is a candidate for his old job on Sunday, the mayor of the city of Le Havre.
