jpnn.com, PARIS – French President Emmanuel Macron stated that he respects Muslims who are shocked by the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad.
However, Macron insisted that this was not an excuse for violence.
Macron conveyed this in an interview with the Arab television network Al Jazeera which was broadcast on Saturday (31/10). The interview was an attempt by the president who was born on December 21, 1977 to improve France’s intention in the Islamic world, which he said had been misunderstood.
“So I understand and respect that people are shocked by this cartoon, but I will never accept that someone can justify physical violence because of this cartoon,” he said.
In the interview Macron also said that France would not back down in the face of violence. The leader in this secular country stressed that he would defend the right to freedom of expression, including publishing cartoons.
“I will always defend the freedom in my country to write, think, draw,” said Macron.
However, Macron stressed that this does not mean that he or his officials support cartoons about the Prophet Muhammad. According to him, his government’s policies also did not mean that France was anti-Muslim.
“My role is to calm things down, that’s what I do, but at the same time, protect these rights,” he said.(between / jpnn)
