“The word ‘genocide’ means ‘and it has to be described’ legally, not by politicians,” Macron told France Bleu.
“Countries that believe it is genocide have an obligation under international law to intervene. Do people want that? I don’t think so,” he said.
That would mean the country becoming a “partner in the war,” he said, and NATO countries could potentially be drawn into the war.
“Everyone must maintain a sense of proportion. With verbal escalation without considering all the consequences, Ukraine will not be helped,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday accused Makron of avoiding using the term “genocide” in connection with Russia’s atrocities in Ukraine, and of the French leader calling the Russians and Ukrainians “brother nations.”
“Things like that are very painful for us,” Zelensky said.
The term “genocide” has been used in connection with Russia’s crimes in Ukraine by both Zelensky himself and by US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudo.
