Macron and Sunak seek to restore the relationship between France and the United Kingdom
French President Emmanuel Macron will meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Friday. Both hope to achieve small-scale political agreements, and establish a closer relationship after a deterioration in relations.
In this sense, the French president expressed his concern about the impact that Brexit would have on the economy of the EU countries.
This led to a certain degree of distrust of the United Kingdom among the French, a position that was reflected in the position of France during the negotiations between the island and the EU.

The fishing agreements were also a source of tension between the two countries.
Brexit as a central issue
Brexit meant the loss of shared fishing grounds and added problems with immigration crossing from France through the English Channel, as the UK has tried to reduce it by imposing stricter border controls.
This caused some irritation in France, as it felt left out of the UK’s efforts to control immigration.
Sunak, for his part, was a defender of Brexit during his tenure as finance minister in the Boris Johnson government.
For him it represented a great opportunity to open up new markets, to build stronger trade relationships with other countries, and to increase trade with Commonwealth countries.
He also believed that Brexit would help the UK better understand its economic challenges, and make more responsible decisions about government spending.
On the other hand, he defended the idea that Brexit would allow the United Kingdom to regain control over its immigration policy.
However, as Prime Minister it now appears that he wants a more constructive approach focused on UK-EU cooperation.
