On July 4, 2023, the Government ended the health crisis due to covid-19. In this way, the main measures of the pandemic were withdrawn, such as the use of masks in pharmacies. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned this Thursday, August 17, that covid “continues to be a threat”, mainly due to the appearance of new variants such as EG.5, named Eris, and BA. 2.86, with multiple mutations.
The WHO warned about the potential for contagion of the covid EG.5 variant on August 9. The organization classified it as a “variant of interest” due to its high prevalence and proliferation in the US, China, Japan, Canada and South Korea.
This new strain of the coronavirus has also reached Spain, with Catalonia being the most affected community: the region accumulates 40% of the cases in the entire country and appeared in the wastewater surveillance system from the week of July 10 .

Dr Cormillot explains that there is still no specific treatment for post-covid symptoms and recommends consulting with a professional specialized in the symptoms that you present.
Eris is a subvariant of Omicron and its official name is: EG.5. Actually, the nickname “Eris” was born on social networks, referring to the goddess of Greek mythology that bears the same name. Specifically, this she is the goddess of discord and the representation of life, and she has been chosen continuing with the naming of variants of the covid referring to mythological characters. For example, Omicron is also known as the god of discord.
Maria Ven Kerkhove, WHO representative, noted that Eris has high transmissibility, but that it is not more severe than other Omicron variants. “We did not detect a change in its severity,” she said.
As for the symptoms, they do not vary with respect to those of Omicron and are usually mild:
Cough. Tiredness. Headache. Sore throat. Fever. Nasal congestion. Sneezing. Hoarse voice. Muscle aches. Loss of smell and appetite. Tachycardia. Diarrhea.
In this sense, the WHO reported that old vaccines cannot 100% prevent contagion, but the main pharmaceutical producers are updating their vaccines.
In fact, this Friday, August 18, Moderna revealed that an initial study of its updated vaccine against covid-19 showed its effectiveness against the Eris variant.
The WHO warns that Covid-19 “continues to be a threat” and begins to monitor the BA.2.86 variant (Europa Press).
While Eris continues to spread to different countries, the WHO is already monitoring a new variant: BA.2.86. “It contains a large number of mutations”, and for this reason they classify it as a “variant under surveillance”.
“This once again highlights the need for all countries to maintain vigilance,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO).
