MacOS Catalina 10.15.5: MacOS update notes are becoming more common

Apple has with MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 and security updates for MacOS Mojave and High Sierra introduced a change that bothered some users. The operating systems now indicate new major versions more often, which users can hardly ignore. This is intended to induce users to bring their operating system versions up to date.

This change is reflected in the release notes for MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 documented: Important new versions of MacOS are no longer hidden when using the softwareupdate command with the –ignore flag. So far, it was possible to switch off the red badge, which the operating system would otherwise display with new updates. Previously, you could hide these elements with the command softwareupdate –ignore “macOS Catalina”, for example.

Update notes also for older macOS versions

This change also affects MacOS Mojave and MacOS High Sierra after installing security update 2020-003, which Apple recently released.

If you are bothered by this, you can use a trick to further deactivate the update information. To do this, an entry must be made in the property list file com.apple.dock.plist:

com.apple.systempreferences
dock-extra
<true/>

must be set to “false”. Then the notification, which is shown as a red symbol on the system settings symbol and indicates an update, should no longer be visible.

MacOS Catalina 10.15.5 also got a mode to extend the battery life of Macbooks. A Finder bug has also been fixed, which resulted in crashes when copying very large amounts of files.
