Do you own a MacBook Pro from late 2013 or mid 2014 and want to update to macOS 11.0 Big Sur? Then you better wait a while and read this article first.
A large number of owners of the 13-inch MacBook Pro from late 2013 and mid-2014 report that the macOS Big Sur update has made their laptop completely useless. On the MacRumors forum, a significant number of users report this. Similar problems are also reported on Reddit and the Apple Support community. This suggests that it is a widespread problem.
Black screen during update
Users report that when updating to macOS Big Sur, their laptops completely crashed, with only a black screen as the end result. After an attempt to install the Big Sur update, keyboard shortcuts to reset NVRAM or SMC, for example, no longer worked, any more than restarting in Safe Mode or Internet recovery. As a result, there is no way to get rid of the black screen at this point.
It turns out that the overwhelming number of users experiencing these problems own the 13-inch MacBook Pro from end of 2013 in mid 2014. It is still unclear how many users of these laptop models have been affected, but there seem to be quite a few. It is also remarkable that these are the oldest models, which are still supported by macOS Big Sur.
Apple is aware
In a particular post on Reddit, someone mentioned that Apple Support had told him to send his MacBook Pro to Apple for repair. Someone else said in an Apple Support thread that the issue has been scaled up to Apple’s technical team. We can now assume that Apple is now aware of the problem.
Until it is clear what the cause of the problem is, and Apple comes up with a solution, owners of the 13-inch MacBook Pro from late 2013 and mid-2014 should postpone the installation of macOS Big Sur for the time being.
