Ma’Coco California-Style Mexican Restaurant Opens & More East Austin Business News

1. Ma’Coco, a California-style Mexican restaurant, opened at 501 Comal Street in August. The restaurant serves staples like tacos with tortillas and corn, as well as churro donuts and burritos filled with French fries. 2. Biru Cocina Peruana moved into a common kitchen space at Springdale General, 1023 Springdale Road, in June and began selling its menu of ceviche, empanadas, and other Peruvian foods. Veteran Austin chef Julio-Cesar Florez opened the restaurant informally at his home during the pandemic after his job at Lucky Robot sent him home during the pandemic shutdown. 512-416-1234. www.birucocinaperuana.com

3. Dell Children’s Medical Center will begin construction of a fourth tower at 4900 Mueller Blvd. The campus, which will add 72 beds across three floors, is scheduled for July 2022. At the Sept. 14 meeting, hospital representatives said that construction should be completed in November 2022. 4. Co-owners Jeremy Murray and Eric Sanger’s’ 70s-themed bar Kitty Cohen’s celebrated their fifth anniversary at 2211 Webberville Road in June. The cocktail lounge has an outdoor pool and is often home to pop-up restaurants. www.kittycohens.com

5. Construction is scheduled to begin at Northeast Middle School in Austin ISD following real estate negotiations with the city that put the project on hold. The district and the city have reached a lease agreement that allows construction at 4401 Tilly Street while the two entities work on a long-term agreement.
