The new contract will go into effect after next year, when MacKinnon’s current $ 44.1 million seven-year contract, which he signed in April 2016, expires.

It will not become a free game and the financial situation will be very significant. So far the record holder with an average of $ 12.5 million was Ron Connor McDavid. The Edmonton captain signed an eight-year $ 100 million contract with the Oilers in spring 2017.

Nathan is, of course, one of the first games in the NHL, so we wanted to be able to sign a long-term contract extension before the season. He has a rare combination of speed and strength with a high level of compassion. We are confident that he will be a member of this team for many years to come, said general manager Chris MacFarland on the club’s website.

27-year-old MacKinnon, who won the world championship in Prague with Canada in 2015, was one of the leading Avalanche drivers en route to the Stanley Cup last year. Together with Evander Kane, he scored 13 goals among the top scorers in the entire league and with 24 points was sixth in the scorers team.

The Hart Trophy finalist has been named the NHL’s most useful player in the past five seasons (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21) and has so far averaged more than one point per game in his career. In 638 appearances he collected 648 points thanks to 242 goals and 406 assists. In the playoffs he scored 93 points (41 + 52) in 70 games.

In club history, MacKinnon was the youngest rookie at the age of 18 and 31 days, and subsequently became the youngest recipient of the Calder Trophy for best NHL rookie. In 2020 he won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded to a hockey gentleman.
