One of the biggest online stars of the moment is not a person, but a molecule. Users tapped more than a billion times TikTok ‘magnesium’ in the search bar. This would make you more relaxed and happier. Manners investigates: is it true? And if so, how do I get it into my body?
Most of what TikTokusers find it worthwhile, that is not the case. For example, the top ten most viewed videos ever consist of a man in a dirty bathroom who dances to Nelly Furtado and an (admittedly attractive) woman bobbing her head to an annoying pop song.
We therefore waited to write an article about the newest star of TikTok, the substance magnesium, until we were convinced that it was not nonsense. That moment has now arrived.
Science confirms TikTok claims about magnesium
It started with one well-known TikTok influencer who claimed he felt happier after increasing his magnesium intake. A whole bunch of other TikTokkers imitated him and they were all equally lyrical.
Published this week a meta-analysis in which the scientific research on magnesium was criticized. And indeed, according to the researchers, four out of eight experiments with magnesium sufficiently demonstrated that intake of the substance caused a reduced stress level in the test subjects. In addition, magnesium reduced feelings of anxiety, caused more relaxation and could make symptoms disappear in people with mild depression.
Chemistry for dummies
Magnesium is the basis for the production of melatonin (the sleep hormone) and serotonin (the happiness hormone). In short: the fabrics that make you relaxed and happy.
Although scientists warn that the evidence regarding the positive effects of magnesium is still a bit on the thin side, there is no doubt that it is a lot more promising than all the other vitamin and supplement fads fueled by shady influencers. In addition to magnesium’s undisputed health benefits (it’s good for your brain and your muscles), its effects on your happiness level are promising to say the least. In our opinion, enough reason to boost your magnesium intake!
This food contains a lot of magnesium
The recommended daily allowance for magnesium is 350 milligrams for men and 300 milligrams for women. You can take it from a jar, but magnesium is more effective if you let your body get it from food.
These are the top ten most magnesium-rich foods:
Food Magnesium 1. Mackerel 97 milligrams per 100 grams 2. Brown rice 78.8 milligrams per portion 3. Dark chocolate 64.6 milligrams per cube 4. Nuts 54 milligrams per handful 5. Spinach 45 milligrams per hundred grams 6. Banana 30 milligrams per banana 7. Pasta 28 milligrams per tablespoon 8. Avocado 20 milligrams per half avocado 9.
