Maciej Prus was born on November 9, 1937 in Sambor. He spent his early youth in Bielsko-Biała, where in 1954 he passed his matura exam at the Liceum im. M. Copernicus. In 1961, he graduated from the Acting Department of the State Higher School of Theater in Kraków, and in 1968 he graduated from the Directing Department of the State Higher School of Theater in Warsaw.
In 1965–68 he worked as an actor and assistant director to Wanda Laskowska at the National Theater in Warsaw. He made his directorial debut in 1968, staging “The First Day of Freedom” by Leon Kruczkowski at the Baltic Dramatic Theater in Koszalin-Słupsk.
In the early 1970s, Maciej Prus staged performances at the Ateneum Theater in Warsaw and the Teatr im. Wojciech Bogusławski in Kalisz, where in 1970-72 he was employed as a full-time director. In 1974–76, the artist returned to Kraków, where he worked as a director at the Stary Theatre. In the 1977/78 season, Prus was the artistic director and director of the Musical Theater in Słupsk, and in 1980–82 he was the artistic director of the Wybrzeże Theater in Gdańsk.
In the second half of the 1980s, the director was primarily associated with the Teatr Studio im. SI Witkiewicz in Warsaw and the Teatr im. Stefan Jaracz. In the years 1990-93 he was the artistic director of the Dramatic Theater in Warsaw.
Maciej Prus has staged many operas, including Stanisław Moniuszko’s “The Haunted Manor”, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, Karol Szymanowski’s “King Roger”, Ludvig van Beethoven’s “Fidelio”, Piotr Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” .
For his artistic achievements, he was awarded the Silver and Gold Cross of Merit. Badge “Meritorious Cultural Activist”, Silver Medal “Meritorious to Culture – Gloria Artis” and the Award of Cyprian Kamil Norwid in the theater category for directing the play “Madame de Sade” at the National Theater in Warsaw.
