After being closed for weeks, the ruin city of Machu Picchu will open again from next day in Peru. Due to unrest in the country, the famous spot in the Andes could not be visited by tourists. Now there is an agreement between the authorities, the tourism industry and local leaders that must guarantee safety on site and on the way there.
Due to the closure of Machu Picchu on January 21, many tourists were trapped. More than 400 of them were evacuated by helicopter to Cusco.
The deposition of left-wing president Pedro Castillo and his arrest in December sparked large-scale protests and riots, particularly in the south of the country. They expanded to the capital Lima. Dozens of people have been killed in clashes with security forces.
Castillo was succeeded by his fellow party member Dina Boluarte. He hasn’t put the genie back in the bottle yet. There are still protests and demonstrators are demanding her resignation. They also want a new constitution. The current constitution was introduced in the 1990s under right-wing President Fujimori. It would mainly serve the interests of the wealthy, business elite.
