The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saabreported this Saturday that the collaborator of the opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in the state of Barinas, Emil Brandtarrested in the last few hours, will be charged for his alleged participation in conspiratorial plans, among other accusations.
According to the prosecutor, Brandt will be transferred to Caracas to appear before the Second Court of Control against Terrorism, where he will be charged – he announced – for “the crimes of conspiracy, association, gender violence (physical) and insult to the official”, for “assaults” against “several police and military women”.
He noted that Brandt is allegedly linked to “violent events that occurred in Barinas on January 15” that “were part of the initial plan to carry out terrorist actions on January 1” in the state of Táchira (west, bordering Colombia) “until escalating to Caracas”, a plot that, according to recent statements by Saab, included an assassination plan against President Nicolás Maduro.
According to local media, on January 15, Teacher’s Day in Venezuela, there were in Barinas, as in other regions of the country, protests to demand an increase in wages and improvements in working conditions.
Saab assured that Brandt, “weeks ago, had been summoned without appearing at the prosecutor’s office,” for which an arrest warrant was issued against him as he was, “until today, evading justice.”
Opponents arrested
He added that the Public Ministry (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) “will not allow a similar situation of anarchy and violence to develop in Venezuela, as has been the preconceived plan, as is currently happening in Haiti, where a plan of disastrous actions is carried out outside the law in the streets”.
Previously, Machado accused the Government of Nicolás Maduro of having “kidnapped” Brandt, “just a few hours after” her visit to Barinas, where the opponent carried out political activity ahead of the presidential elections, in which she hopes to compete despite to the disqualification that prevents him from holding elected public office until 2036.
Likewise, Machado indicated that “47 days ago they kidnapped” Luis Camacaro, Juan Freites and Guillermo López, heads of his campaign command in the states of Yaracuy, La Guaira and Trujillo, respectively, who “today are imprisoned in El Helicoide (Caracas). , the largest torture center in Latin America.
In the opinion of the leader of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Brandt’s arrest “constitutes another violation of the already trampled Barbados Agreement.” signed in October by the Government and this opposition alliance that establishes guarantees for the upcoming elections. EFE
