Verdi’s opera with Netrebko and Salsi as an egomaniac couple: Philippe Jordan at the desk of the State Opera provides the sharpness and precision that the singers and directors lack.
The fact that “feathers” in Viennese is a synonym for fear brings a stair joke to this state opera premiere. Black feathers trickle from Lady Macbeth’s hands after the first murder, and finally, when Macbeth is stabbed from behind on the open stage, Macduff rips an abundance of them from his back: feathers as a symbol of blood, black, bushy, gruesome. But springs in the figurative sense apparently had director Barrie Kosky – and did not appear in front of the curtain post festum. The end of his state opera debut trauma, caused by the boos in 2005 on the occasion of his “Lohengrin” production?
