Ma Ying-jeou, former President of Taiwan, makes historic visit to China after the end of civil war-era tensions.

Former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou started his personal visit to China on the 27th.

Former President Ma, who served as president from 2008 to 2016, is visiting China for the first time as a former or incumbent Taiwanese leader since the Chinese Nationalist Party, which was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party in the second Chinese Civil War in 1949, crossed over to Taiwan.

Former President Ma arrived in Shanghai today, leading a delegation of academics and university students, as well as his family.

Former President Ma plans to visit Nanjing, Wuhan, Changsha, etc. until the 7th of next month, and meet with college students from Fudan University in Shanghai and Hunan University in Changsha.

Then, on the 5th of next month, he plans to visit the tombs of his ancestors in Xiangtan, Hunan Province.

Former President Ma told reporters before departure that day, “I hope that peace will be achieved faster and earlier through the enthusiasm of young people and their mutual communication to improve the atmosphere between the two sides.”

Meanwhile, the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation said it did not anticipate the possibility of former President Ma’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but said it would “follow the organizer’s decision.”
