M&A Activity and W&I Insurance: Insights from the Pacific Region in 2022

There was a healthy level of M&A activity in 2022 and a continued reliance on W&I insurance as standard market practice for large and medium-sized businesses in the Pacific region.

Deal activity was down from record 2021 levels, but compared favorably to the pre-pandemic years. Rising macroeconomic and geopolitical pressures, including inflation and higher interest rates, created significant uncertainty for dealmakers. This led to the region experiencing a drop in deal flow and transaction closings during the second and third quarters.

Despite the challenging settlement environment, Marsh placed a combined 82 primary and surplus W&I policies in 2022, compared to 81 in 2021. A strong settlement environment in the first quarter that carried over from 2021 and a resurgence in settlement volume in the fourth quarter largely contributed to this result. The policies placed represented US$2.3 billion in limits, only 9% less than in 2021.
