A week ago it was announced that Johan Abrahamsson, former chairman of the Moderates in Västra Götaland, would take a break from his duties. Abrahamsson is now resigning.
– He puts the party first and that is a wise decision. When you don’t have full confidence, Johan Abrahamsson felt that he can’t continue, says Anna Vedin (M), who will now be acting chairman.
The announcement of the resignation comes after P4 Skaraborg revealed that Johan Abrahamsson (M) shared both racist and sexist material in a private chat with a party colleague during the years 2019–2022.
Don’t want to split the Moderates
In an internal letter to the Moderates, Johan Abrahamsson (M) writes that he is resigning because he does not want to split the party.
– I do not intend to contribute to splitting the party because of my own mistakes. What emerged represents neither my nor the party’s values. I cannot undo what has happened, much as I would like to. Therefore, I choose to step down and not continue as chairman of the Moderates in Västra Götaland, he writes.
Vedin: “Must work on”
Anna Vedin (M) is proud of Johan Abrahamsson’s work, but at the same time believes that the Moderates now need to work more on their core values.
– What has happened shows that we must continue to work on our value-based work, she says.
Johan Abrahamsson will remain as chairman of the municipal board in Mariestad.
SVT has applied for Johan Abrahamsson on repeated occasions.
