From August 18 to 20, in the courtyard of the “M/Darbnīca” cultural space, as part of the city’s celebrations, its own holiday festival will be held, where both Latvian and foreign jazz and global music artists will perform. It should be noted that entrance to all the events of the Holiday Festival will be free of charge!
This Friday, August 18, from 7:00 p.m., fans of quality jazz will be delighted by the Livas Dumpe quintet at “M/Darbnīkė”. “In its compositions, you can hear the textures of chamber music, created with the help of voice, flute and double bass, complemented by rough, dynamic bursts of sound in the guitar and drum parts. Impressionistic harmonies in Liva Dumpe’s music are skilfully contrasted with a more experimental sound. In combination with unusual lyrics, the amplitude of which ranges from simple metaphors to the most important problems of today, an energy is created that can bring the listeners into a real world of mysticism,” this is how jazz music connoisseurs announce this project. Together with singer and pianist Liva Dumpi, flautist and guitarist Kathy Ringa-Karahon, bassist Omer Govreen and drummer Ilia Rayskin will perform.
After Liva Dumpe’s quintet, vibrophonist and keyboardist Miķelis Dzenuška will take the stage at “M/Darbnīcas” courtyard on August 18 at 9 p.m. with his group “Uzvaras bulvāris”. It is a “funk” and “fusion” stylistic composition from Riga, which was born two years ago after the initiative of Miķeļis Dzenuška to unite eight friends and studio mates in order to pursue new combinations of sounds and creative ideas. “Uzvaras bulvāris” has successfully performed at the international improvisation, jazz and global music festival “Rīgas Ritmi”, as well as collaborated with the jazz music publishing house “Jersika Records”, releasing the record “Satiksmes nozods”. Pianist Matīss Žilinskis, guitarist Sven Vilsons, saxophonist Artūrs Sebris, trumpeter Reinis Puriņš, bassist Daniēls Pelcis, drummer Jēkabs Zemzaris and percussionist Uģis Upenieks will perform together with Miķelis Dzenuška.
On August 19, the musical program of the holiday festival will be started by DJ Eduards Švāns at 3:00 p.m., and at 5:00 p.m. there will be a presentation of a selection of jazz from the publishing house “Jersika Records” and the cultural space “M/Darbnīcas”, as well as a discussion about Latvian jazz, in which the artistic director of “M/Darbnīcas” will take part Maija Moira Mazanova, music journalist Kaspars Zaviļeiskis, music reviewer Mikus Solovejs and several authors of the pieces included in the selection.
The concert program will start at 20.00 by the group “MASA”, which is a project created by pianist Rudolf Macat together with singer Elīna Silova, saxophonist Kārli Auziņa and drummer Ivars Arutjunjanas. “The quartet will offer a transcendental, hypnotic flight of minimalism, mixing together electronic music and jazz and arriving at their original compositions in the process of improvisation.”
On the other hand, at 10:00 p.m., the Ukrainian singer Olga Lukačova will perform together with the group “Funk Reunion” on the “M/Darbnīcas” courtyard stage. It is one of the most well-known Ukrainian jazz and funk music associations, which this time, for some reason, will not perform in full, but a great concert program has been prepared for the Latvian audience, in which passionate Ukrainian musicians cannot do without surprising experiments for themselves and the audience. DJ Mareks Ameriks will close the evening from 23.00, offering a vinyl set of a mixture of jazz, funk and hip-hop.
On Sunday, August 20, the Holiday Festival program will start even earlier. Already from 13.00, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in the activities of the association “Ukulele Rīga”, which will be ukulele playing lessons for experts of various levels. Katrína Dimantas will play the role of the main expert.
At 16.00, the stage of the festival will be dedicated to the Polish artists “Zubek & Pentz Piazzolla Duo”. Piotrs Zubek and Janek Pencs rediscover the forgotten songs of the legendary Argentinian composer, bandoneon virtuoso and nuevo tango pioneer Astor Piazzolla. It’s jazz in an innovative, modern sound, where vocal improvisations meet top-notch fingerstyle guitar playing. At 18.00, the so-called “grand finale” of the Holiday Festival – the “City Jazz Big Band” concert will be played. It is a group of young people from the big band school under the leadership of Latvian Radio big band trombonist Kārļis Alfrēdas Feldberg, but the special guest will be singer and trumpeter Jete Rebeka Strazdiņa. The concert program will feature compositions and arrangements by iconic big band composers, as well as compositions by Latvian composers close to everyone, portraying the energetic sound of a jazz big band in full.
