Earthquake with Magnitude (M) 6.4 shook the north coast region California, United States of America (WE). At least two people died, with homes, roads and water supply systems damaged. Tens of thousands of residents also do not receive electricity.
As reported Reuters, on Wednesday (21/12/2022), an earthquake shook on Tuesday (20/12) early in the morning, i.e. around 02.30 am local time, followed by about 80 aftershocks. The quake’s epicenter was recorded off the coast of Humboldt County, which is 350 kilometers north of San Francisco.
Humboldt County is a rural area known for its redwood forests, local seafood, logging industry, and dairy farming. The area is also known for relatively frequent seismic activity, although the latest earthquake caused more disruption than previous earthquakes.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said two people died from a “medical emergency” that occurred during or after the earthquake. About 11 other people were injured.
In a separate statement, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) said the tremors set a building on fire, which was quickly extinguished. Two other buildings reportedly collapsed in the earthquake.
Detailed information on the death toll from the earthquake is not very clear. However, one of the survivors was a child who suffered a head injury. Another survivor was a senior citizen who suffered a broken hip.
Meanwhile, a report from power grid monitoring site PowerOutage.us said about 79,000 homes and business centers in the Ferndale area and Humboldt County went without electricity in the immediate aftermath of the quake.
