Lyudmila Navalnaya Files Lawsuit Against Russian Authorities Over Refusal to Release Navalny’s Body

Lyudmila Navalnaya, the mother of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has filed a lawsuit against Russian authorities. They refuse to release her son’s body. This was reported by the Russian state news agency TASS.

According to TASS there will be a hearing on March 4 in the case, which Navalnaya filed at the Salekhard court. That city is located above the Arctic Circle near the town of Kharp. That is where the prison camp where Navalny died on Friday is located.

Since Navalny’s death, Navalnaya has been trying to find out where her son’s body is. The day after his death, Russian authorities claimed that Navalny’s body had been taken to a mortuary in Salekhard. But a morgue employee said otherwise Reuters that the body never arrived there.

Earlier this week, Navalnaya requested Russian President Vladimir Putin to release Navalny’s body via a video message. This way she can bury her son in a dignified manner.

On Monday, Navalny’s family was told by Russian authorities that they would hold the body for two weeks. According to the authorities, this is necessary for an investigation. The relatives suspect that the Russian authorities are trying to conceal Navalny’s cause of death and erase traces by detaining the body for a long time.
