There are the ghost stations, the deepest station in the metro network, but also the giant letters visible on the TCL network in Lyon.
Commissioned in 2000, when the extension of line B to the Stade de Gerland opened for operation, the “Place Jean Jaurès” station has a special feature. Several giant white letters support its ceiling. Thousands of passengers pass without paying attention, but what do they mean?
The pillars form a word
The decoration of the station was carried out in collaboration between the architect Robert Dussud and the artist Patrick Reynaud on the theme “The invitation to travel”. The ceiling is covered with stars with lighting designed by Philippe Hutinet.
The quay wall in the direction of Charpennes – Charles Hernu is covered with an excerpt from a large map of the world and is baptized “Rive de la Planète” while in the direction of Gare d’Oullins the pillars form the word “ITINERARY”.
Why this choice of word? The decoration of the Jean Jaurès station in the 7th arrondissement is supposed to represent the theme of mobility embodied by this metro extension inaugurated in the 2000s.
The line was then extended to Oullins station in 2013 and will be extended to Saint-Genis-Laval by 2023.
