It is the oldest suspension bridge in Lyon (Rhône), and it is partly closed since November 2020. The Île Barbe bridge has undergone major work in recent months.
This Tuesday, May 4, 2021, the metropolis is organizing a public meeting at 6.30 p.m., by videoconference, to explain what will happen to this historic bridge. A few days after the incident on the Couzon bridge, the securing of bridges is taken very seriously by the elected officials of Greater Lyon.
This meeting will take place in the presence of Fabien Bagnon (vice-president of the metropolis responsible for roads and active mobility), Philippe Cochet (mayor of Caluire-et-Cuire), Valentin Lungenstrass (Deputy Mayor for Mobility, Urban Logistics and Public Spaces) and Anne Braibant (mayor of 9e arrondissement).
Urgent work
If the bridge has been closed since November 2020 for motorists (it remains accessible to pedestrian cyclists, and inhabitants of the island), it is because several urgent works had and must still be carried out.
Load-bearing cable wires have indeed broken, the bridge deck (supporting structure of part of the road) is eroded, and the vertical rods that we see, with wear, have become very sensitive to the cold.
Elected officials should propose to keep the current traffic conditions, leaving the authorization to pass by car only to residents.
