A Lyft driver was stabbed multiple times yesterday afternoon in a chaotic attempted robbery by a robber who ended up jumping off a highway deck in Lower Manhattan, breaking both legs.
According to the NYPD, the unidentified 36-year-old driver was heading south on FDR Drive and was approachingl Manhattan Bridge en Chinatown when his passenger pulled out a knife around 2:48 p.m. Tuesday and tried to steal his car.
A struggle between the two ensued, causing the driver to lose control of his Tesla before crashing into another car.
“We were hit from behind. The young people left. One was bleeding a lot.” said to Daily News Serge Velbovets, whose Nissan sedan was badly damaged in the collision. “One chased the other and grabbed him with both arms.”
In the midst of chaos 20-year-old unidentified robber stabbed Lyft driver multiple timessaid police sources.
“The driver was wrong…. bleeding from the right side of the chest,” said Yuliya Birbrayer, 48, who was riding in Velbovets’ car. “I couldn’t speak, but he managed to ask me to call his wife. She did not answer”.
In a moment, the attacker got away and tried to hijack another car, Velbovets said. “He jumped through the driver’s side window. I looked in the driver’s side and both guys were struggling. I yelled, ‘What’s going on here?!’” he recounted. The thief “He got scared and jumped out the passenger window. He ran down the road looking for a way out, then he jumped off.”.
A commented but not released video captured the attacker first throwing his black backpack from the FDR Drive overpass onto South St. near Rutgers Slip, about 50 feet up. Then, seeming to contemplate the jump, he sat on the ledge before hanging on by both hands. He eventually broke free, plummeting to the street and breaking both legs, police sources said.
NYPD said the shooter was taken into custody at the scene. The charges against him were still pending last night. Paramedics took the Lyft driver and his attacker to Bellevue Hospital, both in stable condition.
All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
