Luxury cars make room for e-mobility Car | Industry sectors

The 14th Vienna Auto Show is more manageable compared to the previous year, because large suppliers such as Toyota, Fiat, Mazda, Volvo, Citroen and Nissan will not be exhibiting. From 16 to 19 January, the dominant automobile manufacturer in the Vienna exhibition halls is once again the Volkswagen Group with its numerous subsidiary brands. However, luxury car manufacturers such as Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini will be missing this year: They are making room for electromobility, so to speak, which is also the focus of this year’s car show. A total of 40 brands and 330 new cars will be presented. As in the past, the auto show takes place at the same time as the holiday fair. In the previous year, organizer Reed Messe Wien had 164,000 visitors at both events. The fair takes place after a difficult car year.

While the car industry wants to build more on electromobility, the number of registrations for new vehicles is shrinking. Compared to 2018, 4.7 percent fewer new cars were registered from January to November, the statistical data show. A total of 306,681 new cars came onto the streets in the eleven months. New registrations of diesel cars fell by 11.1 percent and those of petrol-driven cars by five percent. The proportion of petrol engines in the newly registered cars was 54 percent. Diesel vehicles only had 38.2 percent, compared to 41 percent a year ago. In the alternative, new registrations rose from a very low level by 52 percent to 23,766 cars. Of these, 46.6 percent were gasoline hybrid cars, 36 percent were purely electric and 15.1 percent were diesel hybrid cars , VW remained the market leader with a 16.1 percent share of the overall market – despite a 8.7 percent decline.
