Italian archaeologists have uncovered a luxurious Roman house near the Colosseum. They found an “exceptional” mosaic of shells, marble and precious glass.
According to the Italian Ministry of Culture, the mosaic shows three large ships sailing across a wavy sea towards a coastal city.
The Roman house is more than two thousand years old. According to the investigation, the artwork shows that the owner of the house – possibly a senator – had won a battle.
The building, which dates from around 100 BC, is “an authentic treasure”, according to Italian culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano.
The house came to the surface after archaeologists discovered a series of walls in 2018. The so-called ‘domus’ has several floors. A few rooms have been excavated so far.
