Luxembourg. Young people are at greater risk of poverty than the rest of the population

In 2021, the Grand Duchy was the ninth EU country where this risk was highest in young people.

In 2021, the risk of poverty rate in the European Union was higher for young people aged 15 to 29 than for the total population in 19 of the 27 Member States, according to Eurostat data released this Tuesday.

Luxembourg, is included in this group, and was even the ninth country to record the greatest difference, with the risk of poverty among young people reaching 20.3% compared to 18.1% for the general population, according to with the European statistics office.


Luxembourg is the EU country where workers are most at risk of falling into poverty, especially immigrants and young people.

The Portuguese are among the most affected by this reality.


In relation to neighboring countries, the Grand Duchy is only surpassed by Germany, where the risk of youth poverty is higher: 20.9% compared to 16% for the total population.

In France, which comes just below Luxembourg, the risk of poverty among young people is 19.2% compared to 14.3% in the general population. In Belgium, the risk is the same in both groups, at 12.7%.

In Portugal, the percentages are also similar: 18.8% for young people and 18.4 for the general population.

The countries where young people were most at risk of poverty in 2021 were Denmark, with 25.6% compared to 12.3% risk for the total population, followed by Sweden with 24.6% compared to 15.7%, respectively.

Conversely, in eight EU countries, young people were less at risk of poverty than the population as a whole, particularly in Latvia, with 23.4% of its total population at risk of poverty compared to 17% of young people, Malta (16.9% vs. 11.3%), Estonia (20.6% vs. 15.7%) and Croatia (19.2% vs. 14.7%).

Six percent of EU young people in material and social deprivation

In 2021, in the 27 Member States as a whole, the rate of serious material and social deprivation among young people was 6.1%, being slightly higher in the total population, corresponding to 6.3%.



Minister Claude Meisch stresses the importance of evaluating and monitoring measures to promote the well-being of children and their parents, guaranteeing access to basic essential services.


Despite the risk of poverty rate among young people in the Grand Duchy being higher than that of the general population, with regard to serious material and social deprivation among the youngest, the country is included in the group that registered the lowest percentages , less than 3%. In 2021, only 2.6% of young people were in this situation in Luxembourg.

In addition to the Grand Duchy, Poland, Sweden, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Croatia, Slovenia, Finland, Austria and Estonia also had percentages below 3%.

On the other hand, the highest proportion of young people experiencing material and social deprivation was registered in Romania (23.1%), followed by Bulgaria (18.7%) and Greece (14.2%).
