The J-group chart speaks volumes. Portugal is already a certain participant in Euro 2024. Slovakia is on the second promotion rung with a two-point lead over Luxembourg. This alone is proof of how important a match awaits our national team today at 20:45 in Luxembourg.
On Monday, the Slovakian football representatives will have a key match of the entire qualification for next year’s European Championship in Germany. If coach Francesco Calzona’s men manage the duel on the lawn of Luxembourg, they will get significantly closer to the third European championship in a row. The Slovaks are currently second in the J-group table with 13 points, while the third-placed Luxembourgers are only two points behind them.
When the Slovakian players drew at home with the Luxembourgers to qualify for the European Championship 2024, a wave of criticism came down on Calzon’s head after the 0:0 draw. The situation in the group finally developed in such a way that, unexpectedly, the Slovakians and the Luxembourgers, as teams that were in the fifth and the fourth performance basket, they fight three rounds before its end for the second promotion place.
The Luxembourg – Slovakia match kicks off at the Stade de Luxembourg (capacity 9,385 seats) on Monday at 20:45 and will be broadcast live by RTVS. The referees are from Spain, headed by chief José Marío Sánchez. Pau Cebrián Devís and Iňigo Prieto will assist him on the lines.
The representative teams of Luxembourg and Slovakia will compete against each other for the seventh time. In the previous six meetings, as many as four victories of the Slovak team were born. The Luxembourgers won only once. It was on February 9, 2011, and the home team triumphed 2:1 in the international preparatory meeting in Luxembourg. The Slovaks celebrated their last victory over these opponents on October 12, 2015, and it was a double joy then. The team from the Tatras sealed their progress to the 2016 European Championship in France with a 4:2 victory in the last qualifying match. From the current wards of Francesco Calzona, Norbert Gyömbér, Juraj Kucka and Róbert Mak appeared on the pitch in that match, Patrik Hrošovský was on the bench.
