Actress, director, producer and bestselling author. What isn’t Lupita Nyong’o? Now the Oscar winner will also head the big Berlinale jury.
President of the International Jury of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival – that sounds like a lot of power, and it is. When Lupita Nyong’o fires the starting signal for the upcoming Berlinale (February 15-25, 2024), the world’s filmmakers will be at her feet. Literally. Mainly, of course, those whose works are in competition at the film festival.
With Lupita Nyong’o, the two festival directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian have once again achieved a real coup. Considering that the world is currently engaged in a battle for Africa, it is no coincidence that Lupita Nyong’o ended up in the head judge’s chair. Lupita Nyong’o is well connected on the African continent and has quite a bit of influence there. In 2020, Forbes magazine named her one of the 50 most powerful women in Africa.
And since her Oscar win in 2014 as Best Supporting Actress in “12 Years a Slave” (director: Steve McQueen), Lupita Nyong’o has been one of the most prominent international actresses. It inspires audiences and film critics alike, according to a press release from the Berlinale.
Lupita Nyong’o is also a bestselling author
“Lupita Nyong’o embodies what we love about cinema: the versatile approach to different projects, the ability to address different target groups and at the same time a consistency that is clearly visible in her roles, no matter how different they may be. We are happy and proud that she has accepted our invitation to be the jury president of the 74th Berlinale,” said the Berlinale management duo Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian, almost exuberantly.
Lupita Nyong’o herself said: “I feel deeply honored to have been appointed President of the International Jury of the Berlin International Film Festival. I look forward to celebrating and recognizing the outstanding work of filmmakers from around the world.”
Lupita Nyong’o was born in Mexico City to Kenyan parents and grew up in Kenya. Nyong’o studied film and theater studies at Hampshire College (USA) and initially worked on various film productions in the USA. She had her international breakthrough with the film “12 Years a Slave”. Lupita Nyong’o really became famous with the “Star Wars” films. Among other things, she appeared in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
In addition to her career in the cinema, Lupita Nyong’o is also active on the Broadway stage, and in 2020 she also wrote the children’s book “Sulwe”, which was on the “New York Times” bestseller list.
