In this regard, Dr. Bahaa Naji, a clinical nutrition consultant, said that lupine is a useful and safe food for diabetics, pointing out the common misconception that it raises blood sugar when consumed.

Nagy added that lupine plays a major role in controlling blood sugar, contrary to what some people claim, and the reason is due to its high content of dietary fiber.

The nutritionist explained that the dietary fiber found abundantly in lupine helps slow down the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestine and prevent them from reaching the bloodstream quickly.

He stressed that one of the reasons why lupine is a suitable food for diabetics is that it contains a small percentage of carbohydrates, which negates the validity of the common myth about high blood sugar after eating it.

In a study published on the National Institutes of Health NIH website, researchers found that eating lupine after carbohydrate-rich foods prevents high blood sugar, not only because it contains fiber, but also because it is rich in vegetable protein as well.

And Italian scientists have come up with a protein found in lupine, which could be a treatment for diabetics in the future, because it helps control levels of the hormone insulin produced by the body, according to Diabetes.co.uk.
