JawaPos.com So far, there is no cure for Covid-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not announced any definitive cure for COVID-19 patients. And, the treatment for Covid-19 is also inappropriate if antibiotics are given.
Lung Specialist from Friendship Hospital, dr. Erlina Burhan explained that COVID-19 infection itself is caused by a virus called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Because it is caused by a virus, the use of antibiotics to treat this condition is not appropriate. Antibiotics do not work against viruses, but bacteria.
“It’s not right to give antibiotics for Covid-19,” he said in a webinar with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI).
According to dr. Erlina, indeed the standard of care in many countries generally uses the drug Azithromycin. The drug is a drug to treat bacterial infections. However, this drug cannot be used to treat viral infections.
“What is used is not the effect of antibiotics, but for anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties,” he said.
According to dr. Erlina, now many new drugs are being researched. Its designation for Covid-19 patients and is being studied a lot.
“Until now there is no definitive cure. The drugs used are not antibiotics,” he said.
He also gave an example of several anti-inflammatory drugs for Covid-19 patients such as low-dose dexamethasone which has been recommended. However, hydrochloroquine is no longer recommended.
“But what is clear is that antibiotics are not intended for Covid-19. We have manuals from 5 professions,” he explained.
