How regattas work

The two competing boats must navigate 6 sections of a circuit: 3 with the wind upwind, i.e. against, and 3 with the wind astern, i.e. in favor. The length of the route is naturally variable as it depends on the wind: it ranges from 1.7 miles (3.14 km) to 2.2 miles (4 km). The minimum width is 0.6 miles (1.1 km) and the maximum width is 0.8 (1.5 km): there are penalties to be paid for those who violate the limits. Each regatta lasts approximately between 21′ and 25′.
