Luna Rossa plays in the semi-final of the Louis Vuitton Cup today: the programme

After the day of rest he returns there Louis Vuitton Cup which will stage the sixth and possibly seventh regatta of the two semi-finals in Barcelona, postponed on Monday afternoon due to lack of wind (follow the live broadcast). The conditional is a must since the weather forecast in Barcelona is not particularly comforting: there should be a maximum wind of 6-7 knots, at the limit of the regulations. Possibly, if there are not sufficient conditions to start, the races will be moved to Thursday 19th when, instead, an increase to 9-11 knots is expected which would allow the AC75s to sail on foils.

Second match point for Luna Rossa and Britannia

Luna Rossa and Ineos Britannia are ahead 4-1, respectively against American Magic and Alinghi, in the best of 9 regatta series and therefore have the second match point available after failing to close the matter already in the fifth regatta. The first race is scheduled for 2pm and will see Britannia challenge Alinghi. Afterwards, around 2.30pm it should be the turn of Luna Rossa who will try to earn a visa for the final (best of 13 regattas, ndr) scheduled from 26 September to 7 October). At the end of the challenge between Luna Rossa and American Magic, if necessary, any race 7 will be played. We remind you that the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup will challenge New Zealand in the 37th America’s Cup.

How regattas work

The two competing boats must navigate 6 sections of a circuit: 3 with the wind upwind, i.e. against, and 3 with the wind astern, i.e. in favor. The length of the route is naturally variable as it depends on the wind: it ranges from 1.7 miles (3.14 km) to 2.2 miles (4 km). The minimum width is 0.6 miles (1.1 km) and the maximum width is 0.8 (1.5 km): there are penalties to be paid for those who violate the limits. Each regatta lasts approximately between 21′ and 25′.

Where to watch the Louis Vuitton Cup on TV or streaming
