A lump in the neck can interfere with breathing and eating.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The majority (90 percent) of hard lumps in front of the neck are not always malignant. However, lumps can make it difficult for sufferers to breathe and swallow.
“The lump presses on the organs around the neck, namely the trachea or airway so that people have difficulty breathing and presses on the esophagus (esophagus) so that when you eat it feels clogged,” said dr. Johanes Purwoto SpPD, K-EMD, in a webinar, written on Thursday.
According to dr. John, not all lump on neck that causes a person to have difficulty swallowing and breathing can be a sign of cancer of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ or gland located at the front of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple (larynx).
The thyroid gland, which consists of the right and left lobes, produces and releases thyroid hormones. This hormone controls functions, such as body temperature, digestion, and heart function.
An ultrasound of the neck can help doctors confirm that a tumor on the thyroid is a solid nodule or a fluid-filled cyst.
“The risk of cancer is higher in solid nodules,” said the specialist in internal medicine consulting endocrine from the University of Indonesia.
People will not be able to distinguish the tumor is cancer or not physically. An ultrasound test is needed to check for nodule growth and help find hard-to-feel nodules. In addition to ultrasound, doctors can also diagnose nodules by testing thyroid hormone levels.
“Only under 10 percent are cancerous from 50 percent of people who get a thyroid lump,” said dr. John.
