Research by the LUMC shows that women who have previously had a miscarriage due to COVID do not have an increased risk of having another miscarriage or stillbirth. Preventive medications are also no longer necessary during pregnancy.
The long-term consequences of miscarriages caused by COVID-19 were not previously known. LUMC gynecologist Marie-Louise van der Hoorn explains the uncertainty this created: “Parents thought: ‘It won’t happen to me again, will it?’ and doctors thought: ‘Let’s give immunosuppressant medication so that the placenta will hopefully continue to work properly.’ While these medications also cause all kinds of side effects.”
No oxygen
That is why an investigation was started in Leiden. In 2021, researchers from the LUMC and Erasmus MC discovered a link between COVID-19 and placental loss. LUMC pathologist Lotte van der Meeren explains what happens when the coronavirus settles in the placenta: “A placenta is a kind of tree with all kinds of flakes. The virus attaches itself to those flakes. Compare it to a tree full of oak processionary caterpillars. Only the caterpillar is the coronavirus. When the entire tree is full, oxygen exchange is no longer possible. The placenta then literally breaks. And if the placenta is damaged, things will also go wrong with the baby.
Chronic placental disease
Infectious diseases such as malaria, CMV and listeriosis can cause placental disease. We know that the chance of the disease returning in a subsequent pregnancy is very small. But there is also a rare variant, where the chance of recurrence is very high.”
The goal of new study was to investigate the recurrence rate of COVID-19-related placental disease. This involved parents who were affected by the consequences of the virus.
Of the 19 new pregnancies, 17 ended in live birth. According to Van der Hoorn, the two miscarriages that occurred were the result of other causes.
Fine
The study is small, but nice, says Van der Hoorn. “You remove a lot of uncertainty, medicines are no longer needed and how beautiful is the moment when parents can hold their child in their arms, healthy and well.”
