LUMC is investigating thrombosis at COVID-19

Blood vessels get clogged

It is now known that blood vessels of patients with a coronavirus infection can become blocked by blood clots. This phenomenon is called thrombosis. COVID-19 patients often have a pulmonary embolism or a thrombotic leg. A cerebral infarction can also occur as a result of this infection.

Cerebral infarction with COVID-19

The first research project revolves around COVID-19 and cerebral strokes. In this study, Menno Huisman, Erik Klok and Suzanne Cannegieter from the departments of Internal Medicine – Thrombosis and Hemostasis and Clinical Epidemiology work together with Marieke Wermer from the Department of Neurology, and with researchers from Radboud UMC and participating hospitals.

Cerebral infarction

The researchers will map the occurrence of the cerebral infarction in a large number of COVID-19 patients who have been in intensive care, investigate the cause and consequences and evaluate the appropriate treatment to prevent these cerebral infarctions. This research is funded with 500,000 euros by ZonMw and supported by the Dutch Heart Foundation.

Venous thrombosis at COVID-19

Earlier in June of this year, LUMC researchers from the department of Thrombosis and Hemostasis and Clinical Epidemiology, together with Dutch thrombosis researchers within the Dutch Covid & Thrombosis Consortium, already received a grant of 800,000 euros from ZonMw and the Thrombosis Foundation Netherlands to find out why COVID- 19 causes venous thrombosis, and how best to prevent and treat it.
