The Swedish municipality of Lulea wants residents to say hello to each other on the street. The municipality believes that this would greatly improve their well-being.
The 80,000 residents of Lulea are said to be too introverted and walk silently through the streets. According to the municipality, this must come to an end in the interest of social cohesion, public health, safety and well-being in general.
That is why the municipality has launched a campaign on social media. Placards have also been placed on city buses and municipal buildings. Residents are thus called upon to say ‘Ha’ or to greet passers-by in some other way.
“Saying hi seems like a small thing, but research shows that it builds social bonds and improves well-being,” the municipality says. According to a municipal official, more and more people in Sweden are feeling lonely, especially in the 16 to 29 age group.
The introverted attitude is also said to be a result of the cold in northern Sweden. In December the sun shines at most three hours a day in Lulea, which is located more than 700 kilometers north of Stockholm. The average temperature is around -10 degrees.
